Habakkuk
Habakkuk wrestles with the paradox of God’s justice. He begins by asking, “How long, O Lord, shall I cry for help, and you will not hear?” (Habakkuk 1:2), as he watches Judah’s corruption. God’s reply—that He will use Babylon as an instrument of judgment—only deepens the prophet’s questions. Yet through this dialogue, Habakkuk affirms faith in God’s ultimate justice: “The righteous shall live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:4). The book ends in worship: “Though the fig tree shall not blossom... yet I will rejoice in the Lord” (Habakkuk 3:17–18), modeling trust amidst uncertainty.
Author: Habakkuk – Prophet of Faith and Lament
Habakkuk was likely a temple prophet with poetic skill and theological depth. Rather than speaking to the people, he speaks for the people to God, voicing doubt, then yielding to worship. His raw honesty makes his work deeply relatable today.
Time Period:
Biblical: Shortly before Babylon's invasion (~609–605 BC)
Scholarly: Typically dated around 605–597 BC
